Fifth Graders Move Into Their Middle School Chapter

Stsudnet walking across graduation stageAmidst a crowd of joyful families, the fifth-grade students of Pequenakonck Elementary School walked the stage to accept their certificates of completion. They reflected on their elementary education and took their first steps toward middle school, ready to embrace new challenges.

"The Capstone Project has prepared us for the shift to the Profile of A Graduate at the high school," said fifth-grade speaker Michael, referring to the upper school mission statement. "Our work at PQ has set a strong foundation for our path to success in middle school."

"We see talented athletes, musicians, artists, scholars, and future leaders before our eyes. Don't back away from experiences because of fear. Join that club that interests you, play that sport you always wanted to, and try out for the musical. Recognize that fear and use it to your advantage," said Principal Roy Martin. He encouraged them to focus on positive self-talk. "Continue to grow, take risks, and follow your true north."

Martin thanked the board, faculty, staff, and families for supporting each student. "Today is about your successes and hard work throughout your educational career. Success is always a shared experience, and reflecting on those who helped you get here is important," he said.

"Learning to read and write aren't the only things we learned at PQ. We have learned to be kind to our friends, others, and, most importantly, ourselves. We also learned to make friends and be friends," fifth-grader Adeline said during her speech. "Even though our journey at PQ is coming to an end, the rest of our journey is only beginning.
